Murkomen Meets West Pokot Residents to Address Insecurity
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has held a crucial meeting with residents and leaders of West Pokot County to deliberate on sustainable solutions to the persistent insecurity plaguing the region. The meeting, which brought together elders, youth, and women, focused on the root causes of cattle rustling and banditry, with a strong emphasis on community-led peace initiatives. The CS acknowledged that a purely military solution is insufficient and that lasting peace requires addressing underlying issues like poverty and competition for resources.
During the forum, residents voiced their concerns about the loss of lives, livestock, and the disruption of economic activities due to the cross-border conflicts. CS Murkomen assured them of the national government’s commitment to deploying more security resources, including the establishment of additional police posts in hotspot areas. He also stressed the importance of dialogue and reconciliation between neighboring communities often pitted against each other.
The CS urged the youth to shun crime and instead engage in constructive activities, promising that the government would support economic empowerment programs. The meeting concluded with a resolve to strengthen the collaboration between the security agencies and the community, with leaders pledging to champion peace and residents committing to share intelligence to prevent attacks.
