Motorists Protest Kiambu Road Expansion, Warn of Business Losses

by KenyaPolls

Motorists have voiced strong opposition to the government’s plan to dual the 23.5-kilometre Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi Road, warning that it could harm local businesses and disrupt commercial activity along the corridor. The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) criticized the project as a potential pre-election spectacle, arguing that the road expansion risks prioritizing political optics over transport efficiency.

MAK highlighted concerns that the dual carriageway would reduce access to small businesses, necessitate large-scale land acquisition, and compromise pedestrian safety. They cautioned that service roads and roadside enterprises could be removed, potentially turning a bustling trading area into a commuter thoroughfare, and endangering cyclists and boda boda riders.

The Cabinet recently approved the dualling project, emphasizing its role in easing congestion and improving connectivity between Nairobi and Kiambu counties. Plans include bypasses, loop roads, service lanes, and provisions for non-motorized transport, as part of a broader Nairobi Metropolitan Area infrastructure modernization plan. Despite the government’s assurances, local motorists remain skeptical about its timing and impact on livelihoods.
