Mombasa’s Coral Builder Swim Inspires Regional Blue Restoration Pact

by KenyaPolls

Following its success (News #321), Mombasa’s Coral Builder Swim catalyzed the East Africa Blue Restoration Pact, signed by Kenya, Tanzania, and Seychelles on December 6, 2025. The pact commits to restoring 10,000 hectares of coral and seagrass by 2030 using citizen science, 3D printing, and marine protected areas. Sport built a reef—now diplomacy will protect it, said CS Susan Wafula. The EU pledged €20 million; UNEP will host the secretariat in Nairobi. The first regional swim, One Ocean, One Stroke, is planned for Zanzibar in April 2026.
