Mombasa Launches Ocean Conservation Triathlon with Coral Planting Finish

by KenyaPolls

Mombasa hosted the first Blue Legacy Triathlon on October 5, 2025—a 750m swim (Nyali Reef), 20km bike (Mtwapa Creek), and 5km run (Diani Beach)—concluding with participants planting coral fragments in underwater nurseries. Organized by Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI) and Tri Kenya, the event raised KSh 18 million for reef restoration. Over 600 athletes joined, including Olympian Hellen Obiri. Your finish line grows a forest—underwater, said marine biologist Dr. Salim Ali. Coral survival rates from athlete-planted units hit 92% after 3 months. The race is now annual, with plans to expand to Lamu and Malindi in 2026.
