Mob Torches Police Station in Nyamira After Teen Shot
A police station in Nyamira County was set ablaze by an angry mob following the fatal shooting of a teenager by police officers. The incident ignited when a group of officers allegedly opened fire on a motorcycle, killing the young rider and seriously injuring the passenger. Enraged residents, accusing the police of excessive force and an extrajudicial killing, stormed the Ekerenyo Police Station, overpowered the officers on duty, and set several buildings and vehicles on fire.

The confrontation escalated rapidly, with the mob looting the station and destroying property before the fire was set. Reinforcements from neighboring stations were called in to disperse the crowds and restore order. The body of the deceased teenager was moved to the Nyamira County Referral Hospital mortuary, while the injured passenger is receiving treatment.

The National Police Service has condemned the arson and launched a full-scale investigation into both the initial shooting and the subsequent attack on the police station. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also taken up the matter to investigate the circumstances that led to the teenager’s death. The incident has left the area in a state of tension, highlighting the volatile relationship between the community and the police.
