MMUST Triumphs Over Maseno University in Thrilling Rugby Encounter

Defending champions Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) narrowly defeated neighboring Maseno University 12-10 in an exciting women’s rugby sevens contest during the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) tournament at Kabarak University Grounds in Nakuru County.
Mary Nasimiyu proved to be the match-winner as MMUST executed a dramatic late rally to overcome Maseno in a closely fought battle.
Down 10-5 at halftime, Nasimiyu received a pass from Christine Loyce close to the 10-meter mark and dashed through to score, bringing the scores level at 10-10.
Loyce successfully kicked the conversion to secure a remarkable triumph for the defending champions.
MMUST had taken an early lead when Judy Atieno scored, though the conversion was unsuccessful, making it 5-0.
Maseno equalized before the break as Esther Munyangi crossed the try line.
After the restart, Susan Njeri put Maseno in front with another unconverted try to make it 10-5, creating a suspenseful finish before Nasimiyu’s crucial move ensured victory for MMUST.
Men’s Rugby
Host Kabarak University capitalized on home advantage, defeating Kabianga University 19-0 in their day two opener.
Wilson Tonya shined with two tries, while Adrian Kotut contributed one more.
Tonya initiated the scoring, and Emmanuel Waswa converted to establish a 7-0 lead.
Kotut increased the margin with an unconverted try before Tonya finished with his second, Waswa adding the conversion to complete the 19-0 rout.
Reigning champions Maseno University were equally dominant, overwhelming Lukenya University 43-0 in a one-sided match.
James Gathu converted Elvis Korir’s initial try, followed by Arnold Otieno adding another.
Lewis Ogado, Weser Brandly, and Erick Otieno all scored tries, with Gathu converting successfully multiple times.
Felix Wanogoya also contributed to the scoreboard, and Korir returned to secure the comprehensive victory.
In other action, Chuka University barely edged out Masai Mara University 12-7 in a tightly contested match.
Basketball 3×3
A new men’s 3×3 basketball champion will be crowned after title holders Kenyatta University were ousted in the quarterfinals.
Rookies Murang’a University of Technology shocked the defending champions 17-9 to advance to the semifinals.
Daystar University defeated Strathmore University 18-14, Mount Kenya University narrowly beat University of Nairobi 17-16, and Embu eliminated the University of Eldoret 18-13.
In the women’s division, Strathmore will encounter University of Nairobi in the semifinals, while USIU will challenge Kisii University.
The Kabarak tournament showcases 15 indoor sports such as badminton, table tennis, darts, scrabble, taekwondo, karate, and chess, along with five outdoor activities: woodball, baseball, rugby sevens, rollball, and 3×3 basketball.
