Amid Kenya’s economic challenges, university students from low-income families face significant difficulties in covering tuition costs. Many risk dropping out or experience academic setbacks due to unpaid balances.
Mount Kenya University has announced new measures to assist students moving forward. University leadership will develop solutions to enable students to continue their education uninterrupted.
Board Chairman Prof. Simon Gicharu acknowledged the severe economic pressures affecting families and student welfare. He noted financial strain can lead some students toward harmful behaviors like substance abuse as coping mechanisms.
Speaking during campus events attended by musician Size 8, Gicharu instructed administrative leniency regarding fees enforcement. “We observe considerable outstanding balances, but urge restraint in collection efforts. Our priority remains supporting student success,” he stated.
The chairman committed to advocating for enhanced support through Kenya’s Higher Education Loans Board. He sending religious group leaders to identify and refer at-risk students needing intervention.
“Pursue your potential fully regardless of background,” Gicharu urged, sharing his own humble origins as encouragement. “Avoid activities threatening your health or academic progress. Assistance remains available.”
Concurrently, MKU disclosed investments to boost academic environments nationwide. These include a Mombasa hospitality facility and modern Thika housing. The institution also expands regionally with Rwanda’s Mount Kigali University and upcoming Kampala operations.
