Meru County has taken a major step toward strengthening its climate resilience following the official launch of the FLLoCA Climate Resilience Programme by Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia. During the event, the Governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting vulnerable households from the growing impacts of climate change, noting that water, agriculture, and environmental health are interconnected pillars of community well-being. The launch marked the beginning of countywide distribution of resilience items aimed at helping residents better withstand climate shocks.
At the ceremony, Governor M’Ethingia flagged off key support materials that will be issued across various communities. These include 8,125 water tanks to promote rainwater harvesting, 364 dairy goats to enhance nutrition and household income, and 1,000 LPG cylinders meant to encourage clean cooking while reducing pressure on local forests. Additionally, 1,000 kitchen garden kits will be supplied to families to support food security in the face of unpredictable weather patterns. The Governor stressed that the initiative is not a giveaway but a long-term investment in dignity, sustainability, and economic stability for Meru residents. He also lauded the partnership between the county government, the national government, and FLLoCA stakeholders for backing locally driven solutions.
The launch attracted county executives, MCAs, and local leaders led by Meru Municipality MCA Hon. Caleb Mutethia, who welcomed the programme as a timely intervention for communities repeatedly hit by droughts and erratic rainfall. Residents expressed optimism that the distributed items will ease daily hardships while equipping households to adapt to a changing climate. As Meru continues to prioritize green development, officials say this rollout signals the county’s broader ambition to build adaptive, food-secure, and environmentally resilient communities for the years ahead.
