Marsabit, Kenya – December 13, 2023: Governor Mohamud Ali has called on residents to reduce over-reliance on livestock keeping and diversify their sources of income to combat the effects of climate change and strengthen food security. Speaking during the 60th Jamhuri Day celebrations at Loglogo Primary School, the governor emphasized the need to support crop farming ventures and adopt sustainable water management practices such as rainwater harvesting to mitigate the impact of droughts and floods on agriculture.

The governor highlighted the severe climate-related challenges the county has faced, including crop failures, livestock losses, and destruction of roads, health facilities, and classrooms due to extreme weather events. Over 4,000 households were affected by floods, while 1,200 goats and sheep were lost. He stressed that enhancing agricultural diversification, water management, and climate-smart farming practices are crucial for resilience and sustainable livelihoods in Marsabit.

Governor Ali also lauded the county’s progress in peacebuilding, urging residents to maintain harmony and cooperate with security agencies to curb cattle rustling and inter-community tensions. He called on communities to vaccinate livestock against Rift Valley Fever and adhere to safe practices that protect children and girls, including alternative rites of passage. The administration pledged continued support through development projects, emergency relief, and collaboration with local leaders and security forces to ensure lasting peace, prosperity, and climate resilience.
