Marsabit County Wins National Special Olympics in Historic Inclusion Milestone

by KenyaPolls

Marsabit County made history at the 8th Kenya Special Olympics National Games in Nakuru on April 27, 2025—topping the medal table with 42 golds, powered by athletes with intellectual disabilities from pastoralist communities. Their boccia, athletics, and unified football teams dominated, showcasing months of training at the newly built *Inclusive Sports Hub* in Moyale—solar-powered and sand-cooled. They trained under acacia trees before. Now they have lights, mats, and coaches, said coordinator Amina Duba, a former teacher. The event saw record participation: 1,528 athletes from 39 counties (up from 24 in 2023). Safaricom renewed its KSh 60 million sponsorship, while UNESCO documented Marsabit’s model for global inclusion guidelines. President Ruto awarded the county a KSh 100 million infrastructure grant.
