Mandera Chiefs to Be Armed in New Government Strategy to Curb Border Insecurity

Mandera, Kenya – September 24, 2025

The government has announced a new set of security measures aimed at strengthening safety along the Kenya–Somalia Border One Crossing, following recent concerns over alleged incursions by Jubaland forces.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, speaking during a security assessment tour in Mandera, confirmed that order had been fully restored at the border point. He reassured residents that the government would not allow foreign conflicts to spill over into Kenyan territory.

Murkomen said the fresh measures include arming and training all chiefs in Mandera County, a move he said will enhance local security coordination and improve rapid response to emerging threats.

We want to ensure learners, teachers, and residents that their security is guaranteed. We won’t allow external conflict to infiltrate homes, schools, or farms, the CS said.

Border Security and Community Collaboration

The CS urged residents to work closely with security agencies, especially in efforts to counter al-Shabaab attacks that have previously targeted the region. He emphasized that safeguarding communities, schools, and livelihoods remains a top government priority.

It is our duty to defend and protect our citizens and borders, Murkomen added, noting that the government will continue to invest in border surveillance and community-focused security operations.

Recognition for Abducted Chiefs

Murkomen also announced that the State will award the Head of State Commendation (HSC) to five chiefs abducted in Mandera while performing their duties.

He said the recognition honors their bravery and commitment to public service in an area frequently affected by cross-border insecurity.

This recognition is a testament to their courage, resilience, and unwavering dedication. The Government stands firmly with all our officers and will continue ensuring their safety as they serve Kenyans, he said.

Background

The announcement follows recent tensions along the Mandera border, where local leaders and residents had raised alarm over alleged movements of Jubaland security personnel into Kenyan territory. The government maintains that the situation is now under control.
