Machakos announces significant shift in revenue collection

by KenyaPolls

Machakos County has reported a remarkable 268 percent increase in revenue following the implementation of a cashless payment system, officials say. The move, championed by Governor Wavinya Ndeti, requires all payments to the county government—from major investors to small-scale traders—to be made via a designated paybill number. The governor highlighted that the initiative is designed to eliminate corruption, reduce harassment of taxpayers, and create a transparent and accountable financial system.
Introduced in 2023, the cashless system has transformed revenue collection across the county. Previously, taxpayers had to hand over cash directly to county staff, creating opportunities for mismanagement. Under the new system, all transactions are digital, allowing for better tracking and monitoring of funds. Governor Ndeti said that beyond boosting revenue, the initiative has also strengthened investor confidence, noting Machakos’ strategic location near Nairobi, major transport corridors, and the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The revenue surge has enabled the county to invest more in service delivery and infrastructure projects. County officials say the increase in funds will support ongoing developments, including market upgrades, road construction, and social programs benefiting residents. Analysts suggest that Machakos’ model could serve as a blueprint for other counties aiming to modernize their revenue collection systems and enhance governance. The county plans to maintain and expand the cashless approach, ensuring that transparency and efficiency remain central to its administration.
