President William Ruto has handed over keys to 176 new homeowners in Machakos County, marking the completion of Phase One of the Machakos Affordable Housing Project. The President said the initiative aims to transition low-income Kenyans from renting to owning homes while generating jobs and revitalizing local economies. He emphasized that the project is part of a broader national plan to expand homeownership, with more than 230,000 units currently under development across the country and thousands already completed. It is our responsibility to ensure that many more Kenyans join you as homeowners, he told residents during the ceremony in Machakos town.
The handover event highlighted the impact of the affordable housing programme on both infrastructure and employment. Many of the workers involved in the construction were awarded certificates under the Recognition of Prior Learning initiative, having advanced from casual labourers to certified professionals. President Ruto also launched the second phase of the Machakos project, which will add 570 more units, alongside key road developments such as the 13km Kangundo–Kivaani road and the 22km Kivandini–Miseleni road. The government is additionally rolling out major investments in markets, electricity access, and public amenities, including the Mutituni Modern Market and 15 other trading centres across Machakos.
The President’s tour drew strong reactions from local leaders, who praised the housing programme for creating jobs and improving livelihoods. Machakos Town MP Caleb Mule noted that more than 500 youth are currently employed through the housing project, while Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua urged residents to reject divisive politics that distract from development priorities. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki also encouraged MPs to support the proposed Infrastructure Fund, saying it will accelerate delivery of critical projects in roads, water, and energy. The President meanwhile defended the government’s development agenda, criticizing leaders who oppose projects that directly benefit citizens.
Looking ahead, the government plans to inject KSh25.5 billion into Machakos County to support the construction of over 30,000 additional housing units, new student hostels, markets, and expanded electricity coverage. President Ruto said these investments signal a long-term commitment to ensuring Machakos remains central to Kenya’s national growth plan. He reiterated that development will be distributed equitably across the country, saying Kenya is not a shareholding nation but one where all citizens deserve equal opportunities. The rollout of Phase Two is expected to begin immediately as the government pushes to deliver more homes and uplift more communities.
