M-Pesa Foundation Invests Ksh 110 Million to Boost Maternal Health in Migori and Nyamira
Migori/Nyamira, September 20, 2025 – Residents of Migori and Nyamira counties are set to benefit from improved maternal and child healthcare following a Ksh 110 million investment by the M-Pesa Foundation.

The initiative includes Ksh 50 million for a new Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) unit at Awendo Sub-County Hospital in Migori, featuring a theatre for caesarean sections, a 12-bed antenatal ward, a 20-bed postnatal ward, an 8-bed newborn unit with a kangaroo room, and other specialized facilities.

In Nyamira, Ksh 60 million was invested in a maternal and newborn unit at Nyamusi Sub-County Hospital, with 11-bed antenatal and 24-bed postnatal wards, a 22-bed newborn unit, and a theatre for caesarean deliveries.

Governor Dr. Ochilo Ayacko and Safaricom Foundation Chairman Joseph Ogutu officiated the opening, highlighting that the facilities will reduce maternal and neonatal complications and ease access to quality care for thousands of residents.

The program builds on previous investments by M-Pesa Foundation, which has already contributed Ksh 101 million to Migori and Ksh 4.1 million to Nyamira health facilities, benefiting over 300,000 people.

The new units bring emergency response closer, improve service delivery, and help reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates. For us, this is a game changer, said Evelyne Alonde, Nursing Officer in Charge at Awendo Sub-County Hospital.

This investment aims not only to provide modern healthcare infrastructure but also to restore dignity and hope for mothers and families previously challenged by limited access to maternal services.
