KVDA Drills Boreholes to Boost Water Access in Samburu West

Samburu West residents and their livestock are set to benefit from improved water supply after the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) commissioned two new boreholes in the sub-county. The project, part of the national government’s drought mitigation programme, is expected to provide clean water to over 18,000 residents and 35,000 livestock, easing chronic shortages that have plagued the area for years.

KVDA Managing Director Sammy Naporos said the boreholes, powered by solar energy, will pump 30,000 litres per hour at Nontoto Arus village and 9,000 litres per hour at Garma village. The water will serve nearby schools, households, and pastoralists, creating opportunities for kitchen gardens, enhancing food security, and reducing conflicts over water with neighboring communities. Naporos added that KVDA has invested Sh130 million in 12 water projects across Samburu West and Samburu North, with two already completed, two ongoing, and eight more slated for completion by June 2024.

Residents welcomed the development, noting the significant relief it brings to women and children who previously walked over 20 kilometres to fetch water. Pamela Lekuku, a resident of Nontoto Arus, said the borehole will free up time for household chores and small-scale farming, significantly improving daily life. The commissioning ceremony was attended by Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda, KVDA Chairman Mark Chesergon, and other board members, who encouraged communities to sustain the projects through borehole committees and proper maintenance.
