Doctors in Kiambu County have called off a 151-day strike after reaching a return-to-work agreement with Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s administration. The deal was announced at a press briefing on October 24, 2025, attended by KMPDU Secretary-General Davji Atellah, Governor Wamatangi, and Council of Governors CEO Abdullswamad Nassir. The protracted industrial action, which began on May 27, 2025, had been fueled by delayed salaries, stalled promotions, unclear supervisory structures, and claims of political interference.

Governor Wamatangi acknowledged that political factors had exacerbated the strike, but assured that the county had taken concrete steps to address the doctors’ grievances. Under the agreement, withheld salaries will be paid, dues reinstated, and claims of bullying and intimidation formally addressed. The Council of Governors confirmed that the county pledged there will be no victimization of medical staff who participated in the strike, ensuring a safe and fair work environment as doctors return to duty.

The strike had significant consequences for health services, with reports indicating over 100 newborn deaths during the period. The resolution is expected to restore stability in hospitals, improve patient care, and rebuild confidence among both staff and residents. Governor Wamatangi urged cooperation from all healthcare professionals, emphasizing the importance of teamwork to protect public health. The agreement sets a precedent for collaborative problem-solving and highlights the need for continuous dialogue between county leadership and medical staff to prevent future disruptions.
