Kitui to market tourism circuit linking Nzambani Rock with bird‑areas and game reserves

by KenyaPolls

Kitui County government has unveiled plans to develop and market a tourism circuit connecting Nzambani Rock with key birding sites and game reserves in the county. The initiative is aimed at boosting tourism, creating jobs, and promoting conservation in one of Kenya’s arid and semi-arid regions.

The tourism circuit will link Nzambani Rock—a natural granite formation and popular cultural site—with notable wildlife habitats, including the Mwingi and South Kitui game reserves, and bird-rich ecosystems in the region. Officials say the initiative will attract both domestic and international tourists by offering a comprehensive nature, culture, and adventure experience.

County officials highlighted that the project is part of broader efforts to diversify the local economy, which has traditionally depended on agriculture and trade. The tourism strategy includes improved infrastructure such as access roads, signage, visitor centers, and partnerships with local communities to offer guided tours, cultural experiences, and eco-friendly lodging.

Kitui County’s Tourism and Wildlife Department noted that promoting the circuit will also strengthen conservation awareness among residents and visitors, ensuring sustainable use of natural resources.

The project aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 goals of developing the tourism sector as a driver of economic growth, particularly in underexplored regions. With proper marketing and infrastructure support, the county hopes to position itself as a prime destination for eco-tourism and cultural heritage experiences in Eastern Kenya.
