Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has lauded the steady progress made under the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project 2 (KISIP 2), noting that redevelopment works at Kibuye Market are already transforming the trading environment. During an inspection tour, the governor highlighted growing satisfaction among traders and residents, citing newly reconstructed access roads — including the Thepthep–Kibuye–SDA Highway–Primary–Mama Ngina corridor — as a key milestone. The ongoing installations of proper drainage systems and pedestrian walkways, he added, are improving safety, mobility, and the overall user experience within one of the region’s busiest commercial hubs.
The Kibuye Market upgrades form part of Kisumu County’s broader modernization programme, which aims to stimulate local economic growth by providing inclusive and resilient infrastructure. Launched in 2022, KISIP 2 is a national government initiative implemented across 15 urban centres, focusing on enhancing living conditions, strengthening tenure security, and upgrading services in informal settlements. In Kisumu, the project is being executed in close partnership with the county administration and development agencies, with works tailored to address chronic challenges such as flooding, poor accessibility, and unplanned urban expansion.
Following the impressive progress at Kibuye, Prof. Nyong’o announced that the next phase — KISIP 2 Lot 2 — will shift attention to Muhoroni Informal Settlement. Planned works include road improvement, expanded drainage networks, and safer pedestrian routes, all aimed at boosting mobility and reducing public health risks. The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to collaborating with the national government and partners to deliver long-term solutions that enhance livelihoods. As the project advances, Kisumu residents can anticipate better trading conditions, improved settlement planning, and continued investments that support a more organized and economically vibrant urban future.
