Kenyan Counties to Receive Ksh. 7.387 Billion for Climate Resilience Initiatives

NAIROBI, Kenya — Forty-four Kenyan counties are set to receive a total of Ksh. 7.387 billion in County Climate Resilience Investment Grants under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program. The funding, building on Ksh. 979 million distributed last fiscal year for institutional strengthening, will be allocated based on each county’s performance in meeting FLLoCA requirements. To qualify, counties were required to establish climate finance institutions, conduct Participatory Climate Risk Assessments, and dedicate 1.5% of their development budget to County Climate Change Funds. The grants are aimed at developing locally-led strategies to address climate-related risks in sectors including agriculture, water, and natural resource management.

The initiative, managed by the National Treasury and Planning in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry and the Council of Governors, is co-funded by the national and county governments as well as international partners such as the World Bank, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, and Sweden. President William Ruto noted that the program empowers communities to move beyond being victims of climate change, positioning them as key agents in adaptation and mitigation efforts. Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury, Njuguna Ndung’u, emphasized the importance of grassroots engagement in shaping effective climate strategies, while Environment CS Soipan Tuya stressed the need for bold local action to safeguard the environment and public welfare.
