Kindiki Says Peace Restored in Baringo as Government Shifts Focus to Development

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced that security has been restored in Baringo and the wider Kerio Valley, marking what he described as a turning point for a region long troubled by banditry and cattle rustling. Speaking during a church service at AIC Kabartonjo in Baringo North on Sunday, the DP urged leaders from the North Rift to support ongoing efforts aimed at maintaining peace and transforming the area through development. He emphasised that the Kenya Kwanza administration had made significant progress since taking office in 2022, saying the government had finally laid a firm foundation for stability.

Kindiki, who previously served as Interior Cabinet Secretary before assuming the deputy presidency, noted that he made at least 19 visits to the region to personally oversee peace operations. He stressed that criminal gangs—not communities—were behind past attacks, adding that heavy deployment of National Police Reservists and specialised units had played a vital role in regaining control. He assured residents that more officers would be deployed if needed to sustain the progress. Returning to Baringo when security has been restored, he said, was an encouraging sign that the region could now move forward.

With calm slowly returning to the North Rift, the DP said the government is now shifting its focus to long-delayed development projects. He highlighted several major road upgrades—including Kipsaraman–Kinyach, Kinyach–Kapsowar, and Barwesa–Kolowa—which had stalled for years but are now back on track. Kindiki also reaffirmed government plans to prioritise the construction of the Chemolingot–Kapedo–Lokori–Lodwar Road, a critical corridor expected to stimulate trade and improve access to remote parts of the region. At the same time, modern markets are under construction, including a new facility in Kabartonjo town, to support local traders and revive the local economy.

Kindiki lauded President William Ruto for his commitment to restoring peace and expanding development in the North Rift, urging residents to continue supporting the government’s agenda. He said progress in agriculture, water supply, education and infrastructure would only be possible if peace was maintained. The service, led by AIC Baringo Bishop William Kotut, was attended by several leaders including Baringo North MP Joseph Makilap, Eldama Ravine MP Musa Sirma, Baringo Central MP Joshua Kandie and Tiaty MP William Kamket, who echoed the need for unity and collaboration to ensure lasting stability in the region.
