Machakos County Commissioner Josephine Ouko has appealed to residents to cooperate with security agencies to help trace a stolen G3 rifle belonging to the National Police Service. Speaking during Mashujaa Day celebrations at St. Mary’s Primary School in Tala, Matungulu, Ouko urged members of the public to volunteer any information that could lead to the recovery of the firearm, warning that such a weapon in the wrong hands poses a serious security risk to communities. The commissioner did not disclose details of when or where the rifle went missing, but emphasized that community vigilance would be crucial in ensuring it does not end up being used for criminal activities.

Addressing the gathering, Ouko also highlighted several ongoing government projects designed to improve living standards and support development within Machakos County. She pointed to progress in housing initiatives, social welfare programs, connectivity upgrades, and environmental conservation. One of the major achievements, she noted, is the successful implementation of the national tree-planting campaign led by President William Ruto, which aims to grow 15 billion trees by 2032. According to the commissioner, more than 3.1 million trees have been planted across Machakos so far, contributing to national efforts to expand Kenya’s tree cover from 12 to 30 percent. In Matungulu subcounty alone, residents and local administrators have planted approximately 630,000 trees, supported by National Government Administration Officers who have established and managed nurseries in various locations.

Ouko also touched on the government’s continued fight against illicit brews and drug abuse, urging residents to support security operations targeting harmful substances that have affected families and youth in the region. She called for collaboration between community leaders, law enforcement, and religious institutions to help protect young people from addiction and related social problems. Her remarks underscored the importance of shared responsibility in sustaining peace, environmental conservation, and economic progress.

The appeal to recover the missing firearm is expected to prompt increased security surveillance and community engagement in the coming days. Authorities hope that the public’s cooperation will lead to swift recovery, while government-led development and conservation efforts continue to shape Machakos’ long-term growth trajectory.
