Kilifi Man Jailed 30 Years for Wife’s Murder Over Instagram Row

The High Court in Mombasa has sentenced a 40-year-old man to 30 years in prison for the murder of his wife in Majengo Kanamai, Kilifi County. Murad Awadh Mbaraka was convicted of killing Nuru Ibrahim amid persistent domestic conflicts, particularly concerning her Instagram activity. Justice Wendy Kagendo Micheni delivered the ruling.

Principal Prosecution Counsel Frank Sirima led the prosecution case, presenting testimony from ten witnesses who established that Mbaraka committed the crime with premeditation and malice on June 19, 2022. The violence took place before the couple’s five children, with an 11-year-old daughter recounting how she heard her mother cry out for help as her father attacked her.

Forensic analysis confirmed the victim’s blood on a knife, broken pieces of a baby’s cot reportedly used in the assault, and the defendant’s clothing. Testimony also invalidated the defense’s assertion that an intruder committed the crime, and the accused’s employer contradicted his alibi.

According to Justice Micheni, the sentence corresponds to the calculated and violent nature of the offense and serves as both retribution and a warning against domestic violence.

The convicted individual has 14 days to file an appeal.
