Kilifi County Launches Coastal Surf Lifesaving Program

by KenyaPolls

Kilifi County launched Kenya’s first Surf Lifesaving Academy in Shanzu on February 8, 2025—training youth in rescue techniques, CPR, and ocean safety using donated boards from Australia. In 6 months, 120 lifeguards were certified, reducing drowning incidents by 67% along the North Coast. Graduates also compete in surf sports: the *Kilifi Sharks* won bronze at the East Africa Surf Rescue Champs. Saving lives is the ultimate sport, said instructor Evans Mwangi, a former fisherman. The program partners with Kenya Red Cross and Kenya Coast Guard. Plans include lifeguard towers at 10 beaches by 2026.
