Kiambu Sets Up Health Management System Connecting All 114 County Health Facilities

by KenyaPolls

The Kiambu County Government has launched an ambitious KSh1.5 billion healthcare investment aimed at expanding access to medical services and doubling the county’s current bed capacity. Governor Kimani Wamatangi announced the plan during the groundbreaking of the new Kiamumbi Level 3 Hospital, marking the start of construction for 13 new health facilities across various wards. The initiative seeks to strengthen primary healthcare delivery, reduce congestion in existing hospitals, and ensure each ward has at least one functional health centre.

The new Level 3 hospitals—located in areas such as Ndenderu, Gitothua, Kawaida, Kiamumbi, Ndumberi, Gitaru, Kahawa Sukari, Kahawa Wendani, and parts of Thika and Ruiru—will each cost KSh50 million and are expected to be completed by December. According to Governor Wamatangi, each facility will include an outpatient block, a 26-bed maternity unit, a mini-laboratory, and a theatre. He noted that the county has already secured all the required funds and is rolling out a County Health Management System that will digitally link all 114 public health facilities to improve monitoring, procurement, and service efficiency. The automated system will flag low medical supplies, support coordinated management, and enhance accountability.

Beyond the new health centres, Kiambu is also reviving stalled Level 4 hospital projects that had been abandoned for years due to unpaid bills from previous administrations. The county is completing major hospitals in Githunguri, Lari, Bibirioni, Thogoto (Kikuyu), and Wangige, with a combined value of more than KSh400 million. Many of these facilities had deteriorated into abandoned structures, some vandalised or taken over by livestock after contractors withdrew. The Thogoto Level 4 Hospital, launched in 2016, is now back on track and expected to be fully built and equipped by the end of the year.

Looking ahead, Governor Wamatangi says these health investments will reposition Kiambu as one of the most medically equipped counties in Kenya. With the expansion of two major hospitals—Karuri Level 4 in Kiambaa and Gachororo in Juja, each receiving a 200-bed capacity upgrade—the county aims to significantly increase access to specialised care. The nearly completed Sh800 million Githunguri Level 4 Hospital, which will offer ICU services, a maternity wing, a cancer unit, and emergency care, is set to become one of the region’s flagship health facilities. Once the projects are delivered, Kiambu expects to strengthen its healthcare network, reduce patient referrals, and improve health outcomes for more than two million residents.
