The Social Health Authority (SHA) has enrolled 15 million informal sector workers into the new Social Health Insurance Fund as of May 2024. Registration via mobile phone takes under 5 minutes, with contributions as low as Ksh150/month for the indigent, subsidized by the state. Over 3,500 public and private health facilities are accredited, including mission hospitals. The system covers inpatient, surgery, chronic illness, and maternity care. Early data shows 40% reduction in out-of-pocket expenses among beneficiaries. The World Bank has pledged $300 million to support rollout. Universal coverage is targeted by 2025.
