The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger service to Naivasha has resumed after a Ksh2.5 billion track and station upgrade. The Madaraka Express now offers twice-daily trips from Nairobi, cutting travel time to 1 hour 45 minutes. In its first week of relaunch (May 2024), ridership hit 8,000 passengers. New amenities include Wi-Fi, luggage scanners, and wheelchair access. Kenya Railways aims to extend service to Nakuru by 2025. The relaunch supports tourism, logistics, and commuter convenience. Fares remain subsidized at Ksh700 (economy) and Ksh2,000 (first class). The SGR has moved 1.2 million passengers since 2017.
