Kenya’s Renewable Energy Auction Allocates 500MW at Record-Low Tariff of Ksh6.80/kWh

by KenyaPolls

Kenya’s first competitive renewable energy auction has allocated 500MW of solar, wind, and geothermal capacity at an average tariff of Ksh6.80/kWh—the lowest in East Africa. The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) received 1.2GW of bids from 28 firms, reflecting strong investor confidence. Winning projects in Garissa, Meru, and Baringo will be operational by 2026, creating 5,000 jobs. The clean power will lower electricity costs for industries and households. The auction supports Kenya’s goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030 and reduces reliance on costly thermal backups during droughts.
