Kenya Railways has launched passenger service to Nakuru, extending the Standard Gauge Railway commuter line from Naivasha. The twice-daily Madaraka Express now serves Nairobi–Nakuru in 2 hours 15 minutes, with fares at Ksh1,200 (economy) and Ksh3,000 (first class). In its first week, ridership hit 5,000 passengers, easing road congestion on the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway. The service includes Wi-Fi, luggage scanners, and wheelchair access. Kenya Railways aims to extend to Kisumu by 2026. The SGR has moved 2.5 million passengers since 2017, with commuter rail becoming a key pillar of urban mobility in Kenya’s growing cities.
