Kenya Railways Corporation reported a 31% year-on-year increase in freight revenue in 2023, reaching Ksh14.2 billion, driven by Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) efficiency. The Nairobi–Mombasa line moved 6.8 million tonnes of cargo, including containers, cement, and grain. Average transit time dropped to 7 hours, down from 24 by road. New clients include Bamburi Cement and Twiga Foods. The SGR also reduced road maintenance costs by Ksh3 billion. Phase 2 to Naivasha now handles 1.2 million tonnes annually. Plans to extend to Kisumu and Malaba are under feasibility review.
