Kenya’s geothermal capacity has hit 950MW with the commissioning of the 105MW Menengai II plant in April 2024. The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) said the addition cements Kenya’s position as Africa’s top geothermal producer. The plant, developed with Japan’s Fuji Electric, powers over 500,000 homes and supplies clean energy to data centers in Konza. Total renewable share in the national grid now stands at 92%. GDC aims to reach 1,500MW by 2030, reducing reliance on costly thermal backups. The project created 1,200 jobs and includes community benefit funds for host areas in Nakuru County.
