Kenya’s Geothermal Output Reaches 1,000MW Milestone with Olkaria VI Launch

by KenyaPolls

Kenya’s geothermal capacity has hit 1,000MW with the commissioning of the 83MW Olkaria VI plant in May 2024. The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) said the milestone cements Kenya’s position as Africa’s top geothermal producer, generating 45% of the continent’s geothermal power. Olkaria VI, developed with Japan’s JICA, will supply clean, baseload power to data centers, industries, and households. Total renewable share in the national grid now exceeds 92%. GDC aims to reach 1,500MW by 2030, supporting Kenya’s net-zero 2050 goal and reducing reliance on volatile thermal power.
