The Kenya Society for the Deaf and NOCK certified the first cohort of Swahili Sign Language (SSL) Interpreters for Sport on June 5, 2025—trained in culturally resonant gestures for football, athletics, and ceremonies. SSL isn’t translation—it’s cultural embodiment, said lead trainer Grace Akinyi. 12 interpreters deployed at the AFCON U-20 finals and Paralympic qualifiers. KBC now features SSL at all major broadcasts. UNESCO awarded Kenya a grant to document SSL sport lexicon.
