Kenya has started exporting cold-pressed macadamia oil to Germany and France under new EU organic and cosmetic regulations. Processors in Meru and Embu are shipping Ksh1.2 billion worth of oil annually, up from zero in 2022. The product, used in high-end skincare, fetches €25/kg—10x the price of raw nuts. The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and KEPROB certified 15 factories for EU compliance. Over 50,000 farmers benefit from premium prices. The government is supporting R&D in nut-based cosmetics at JKUAT. This marks a strategic shift from raw commodity exports to high-value finished goods under the Export Promotion Council’s Brand Kenya initiative.
