Kenya’s Digital Maternity Wallet Expands to Cover Nutrition and Newborn Care

by KenyaPolls

Kenya’s Digital Maternity Wallet has expanded its benefits to include Ksh2,000 for maternal nutrition and Ksh1,500 for newborn care kits, in addition to existing antenatal and delivery support. Launched in April 2024, the enhanced package targets 1.5 million pregnant women annually. Funds are disbursed via M-Pesa upon verification of clinic visits. Early results from pilot counties show a 25% increase in institutional deliveries and improved infant immunization rates. The system integrates with the Unified Health Records platform and NHIF. The World Health Organization has recommended the model for scale-up across sub-Saharan Africa.
