Kenya’s dairy exports hit Ksh8.7 billion in 2023—a 29% increase—driven by rising demand from Tanzania, Uganda, and South Sudan. Processors like Brookside and Githunguri Dairy exported powdered milk, yogurt, and UHT products, leveraging EAC tariff-free access. The Kenya Dairy Board credits strict quality controls and cold chain investments for market trust. Local milk production rose to 6.2 billion litres, supported by artificial insemination and fodder programs. However, cross-border non-tariff barriers and counterfeit imports remain challenges. The sector employs 1.8 million Kenyans, mostly women. With AfCFTA, Kenya targets $500 million in annual dairy exports by 2030.
