Kenya’s Creative Economy Generates Ksh120 Billion in 2023

Kenya’s creative sector—film, music, fashion, and design—generated Ksh120 billion in 2023 and employed 300,000 people, according to a KNBS report. Film production ( Riverwood ) led with Ksh45 billion, followed by music streaming (Ksh30B) and fashion (Ksh25B). Hits like Kati Kati and Rafiki boosted international sales. The Kenya Film Commission reported 120 local productions, up from 70 in 2021. Challenges include piracy and limited financing. The government’s Ksh5 billion Creatives Fund, launched in Q1 2024, offers grants and equipment leasing. With AfCFTA, Kenya aims to become East Africa’s content hub, targeting $1 billion in exports by 2030.
