Kenya’s Coffee Auction Prices Hit Five-Year High Amid Global Shortages

by KenyaPolls

Kenya’s coffee auction prices averaged Ksh18,500 per 50kg bag in Q1 2024—the highest since 2019—driven by supply constraints in Brazil and Vietnam. The Coffee Board of Kenya reported export earnings of Ksh14.2 billion, up 52% year-on-year. Premium AA lots fetched over Ksh32,000, benefiting 700,000 smallholders. The government’s direct export window allowed 120 cooperatives to bypass brokers and access EU specialty markets. Challenges remain, including aging trees and illegal exports to Uganda. The sector aims to double value addition through roasting and packaging by 2027 under the Coffee Revitalization Plan.
