Kenya’s blue economy generated Ksh50 billion in 2023 from sustainable fisheries, seaweed farming, and marine tourism, according to the Ministry of Fisheries. Over 300,000 coastal households benefited, with certified sustainable fish exports to the EU rising by 40%. The Lamu and Kilifi seaweed clusters now employ 20,000 women, exporting 5,000 tonnes annually to Asia for cosmetic use. The government’s Ksh4 billion Blue Economy Fund supports cold chains, patrol drones, and mangrove restoration. Kenya aims to triple blue economy revenue to Ksh150 billion by 2030 while protecting 30% of its ocean territory.
