Kenya’s Catholic community grieves the loss of Reverend Father Joseph Mokaya, a devoted priest who ministered to the faithful for nearly five decades. Most Rev. Philip Anyolo, Archbishop of Nairobi, announced Father Mokaya’s death on Tuesday evening, January 27, during his treatment at Nairobi’s Mater Hospital. The Archdiocese officially confirmed the sad news in a statement, with Archbishop Anyolo expressing deep sorrow over the demise of the esteemed religious leader.
Ordained on June 28, 1975, at Our Lady of Visitation in Makadara, Father Mokaya embarked on an extraordinary ministry journey across numerous parishes in Nairobi and central Kenya. His influence extended beyond parish responsibilities as he guided future priests as a formator at St. Mathias Mulumba Senior Seminary in Tindinyo and contributed to the AMECEA Secretariat in Nairobi. He also took part in the 43rd International Eucharistic Congress held in the capital city.
Father Mokaya pursued higher theological studies, obtaining both Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Sacred Theology from the University of Nairobi, Duquesne University in the United States, and academic institutions in Rome. His scholarly accomplishments enhanced his pastoral ministry, allowing him to lead communities with profound wisdom and understanding.
The news of Father Mokaya’s passing triggered widespread expressions of sorrow on social media platforms. Parishioners and congregants remembered him as a compassionate spiritual leader and dedicated servant of God. Jane Kogi remarked, “This servant of God genuinely cared for the spiritual well-being of our parents and community. He was present to lay my mother to rest when her time came. A proud Kisii man who fluently spoke Kikuyu, representing a beautiful symbol of unity and love transcending tribal boundaries. Nyamang’ara Parish deeply values your service, Fr. Mokaya. You valiantly fought, you completed your journey, and you remained faithful. Rest in eternal peace, Father. Your legacy continues in the lives you influenced.”
Father Joseph Mokaya’s life exemplifies steadfast commitment to faith, learning, and community service. His ministry touched countless lives and left an indelible impact on the Catholic Church in Kenya.
