KURA Announces Month-Long Night Traffic Disruptions on Ngong Road for Flyover Construction
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has issued a traffic advisory announcing a 23-day disruption along Ngong Road near the Junction Mall area as construction of a new flyover enters a critical phase. The authority said the interruptions—scheduled between November 18 and December 10, 2025—are necessary to allow engineers to install major steel components of the flyover, a project aimed at easing congestion on one of Nairobi’s busiest corridors.
According to KURA, the works will take place nightly between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., excluding Sundays, to minimise daytime traffic pressure. During these hours, motorists will be diverted through the stretch between Nairobi City County Training School and Kenya Science Campus, where temporary two-way traffic will be accommodated. Traffic marshals and police officers will be deployed to guide road users and prevent gridlock around the Junction Mall area, a zone that typically experiences heavy evening flows from Kilimani, Dagoretti, and Karen.
The temporary diversion has sparked mixed reactions among road users, with many welcoming the progress while expressing concern over potential evening delays. Businesses operating near the construction zone are also bracing for disruptions, particularly those that rely on late-night customers and deliveries. KURA has urged motorists to remain patient, drive cautiously near the construction site, and obey all directional signs for their own safety and that of workers on duty.
The Ngong Road–Naivasha Road flyover is part of a major infrastructure upgrade along the wider Ngong Road corridor. Once complete, the four-lane flyover will feature redesigned junctions, pedestrian walkways, and cycling lanes—improvements expected to reduce long-standing traffic bottlenecks around Junction Mall. KURA estimates that the full project will be completed by July 2027, marking a significant boost to Nairobi’s mobility network and the broader push toward modern, commuter-friendly urban transport infrastructure.
