Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni emphasized Kenya’s dedication to collaborating with international partners, particularly the United States, to enhance the nation’s readiness against the Ebola virus disease affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
As Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary, Muthoni stated that Kenya would maintain engagement with friendly nations and development partners in safeguarding public health, provided these collaborations adhere to the nation’s legal framework.
Addressing rising concerns about the Ebola outbreak in the DRC, which has reportedly resulted in over 100 fatalities, the Principal Secretary refuted criticism of Kenya’s foreign partnerships, emphasizing that international cooperation is essential for combating global health threats.
“Kenya cannot operate in isolation,” Muthoni declared, highlighting that international cooperation on isolation facilities and emergency response mechanisms is not unprecedented, as similar arrangements were implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Principal Secretary disclosed that the administration has activated the National Incident Management System and is collaborating with county governments to reinforce surveillance and response measures nationwide.
She additionally noted that border surveillance has been intensified throughout Kenya, with travelers from affected nations subject to enhanced screening protocols.
Muthoni confirmed that as of the previous day, Kenya had reported no Ebola cases.
Nevertheless, she mentioned that the government has established stringent quarantine, monitoring, and response measures to prevent any potential transmission of the disease.
She also reassured Kenyan citizens that the nation’s laboratories can test Ebola samples within six to eight hours, substantially reducing response time for potential cases.
The government has also identified high-risk areas and advised Kenyans to avoid non-essential travel to affected regions as precautionary measures against the lethal virus.
