Kenya Railways carried 2.1 million passengers in 2023—the highest since SGR launch—thanks to affordable fares, improved safety, and expanded routes. The Madaraka Express (Nairobi–Mombasa) accounted for 1.4 million riders, while the Rongai Commuter Line served 700,000. On-time performance rose to 92%, and customer satisfaction hit 85%. The resumption of Naivasha passenger service in May 2024 is expected to add 500,000 annual riders. Kenya Railways is investing Ksh5 billion in new coaches and digital ticketing. The national carrier aims to move 5 million passengers by 2027, reducing road congestion and carbon emissions along the Northern Corridor.
