Kenya Opens Geothermal Training Institute to Build Regional Talent

by KenyaPolls

Kenya has launched the Africa Centre for Geothermal Development in Menengai, Nakuru County—a regional training hub to build clean energy skills. Funded by the World Bank and GDC, the Ksh2 billion institute offers diplomas and short courses in drilling, reservoir engineering, and plant maintenance. Students from Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda are already enrolled. The center partners with Kenyatta University and Iceland’s geothermal agency. It aims to train 1,000 specialists annually, addressing a critical shortage in Africa’s geothermal sector. Kenya’s leadership in geothermal (950MW operational) positions it as a clean energy knowledge exporter.
