Kenya Launches National Strategy for Green Hydrogen Exports by 2030

by KenyaPolls

Kenya has formally adopted a National Green Hydrogen Strategy aiming to export clean hydrogen by 2030 using surplus geothermal and wind power. The Ministry of Energy, supported by the EU and GIZ, plans pilot production in Menengai and Lake Turkana. The strategy targets 1GW of electrolyser capacity by 2035, positioning Kenya as East Africa’s hydrogen hub. A Ksh5 billion innovation fund will support R&D and skills development. Early talks with Germany and Japan focus on offtake agreements for green steel and fertilizer production. Kenya’s low-cost renewable electricity (Ksh5.50/kWh) offers a competitive edge in the emerging $300 billion global hydrogen market.
