Kenya Launches National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) Reforms

by KenyaPolls

The National Health Insurance Fund has launched sweeping reforms under the Social Health Authority (SHA), aiming for universal coverage by 2025. The new system replaces NHIF with a mandatory, income-based contribution model. Over 12 million informal workers have enrolled via mobile registration. Benefits now include mental health, dialysis, and maternity care. The SHA has accredited 3,000 public and private facilities nationwide. The World Bank praised the equity focus but urged fiscal sustainability. Premiums for the poor are subsidized by the state, funded through sin taxes and budget allocations.
