Kenya officially launched its National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy, aiming to position the country as a regional leader in AI research, development, and innovation. The unveiling, attended by over 500 representatives from government, industry, and academia, underscores Kenya’s commitment to inclusive, ethical, and locally driven AI development. The initiative reflects a participatory approach, incorporating insights from expert consultations, focus group discussions, and town hall meetings across the country.

The strategy identifies seven strategic themes focused on three core pillars: AI digital infrastructure, data, and AI research, development, and innovation. These are supported by four enablers: talent development, governance, investment, and ethics, equity, and inclusion. Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, Hon. William Kabogo, emphasized that Kenya aims not only to consume AI but also to create, innovate, and lead globally. Experts highlighted the importance of developing local AI talent, high-quality datasets representing Kenyan contexts, and solutions that deliver broad societal benefits.

The launch drew strong international support, with representatives from the European Union and Germany pledging partnership in research, AI governance, and digital infrastructure development. Dr. Melissa Omino of Strathmore University noted that Kenya’s strategy is a model for holistic, inclusive AI policymaking, while Germany’s Deputy Ambassador Alexander Fierley described it as a benchmark for human-centered technology adoption. Moving forward, the strategy will guide Kenya’s AI development through partnerships, investment in local expertise, and policies that ensure ethical and sustainable AI deployment, aiming to transform Kenya into a regional AI powerhouse.
