Kenya Bans Single-Use Plastics in National Parks and Protected Areas

by KenyaPolls

Kenya has extended its plastic ban to all national parks, reserves, and marine parks effective May 2024. The Ministry of Tourism prohibits single-use bottles, bags, and packaging in protected areas, promoting reusable alternatives. Violators face fines up to Ksh1 million or 2 years in jail. The move aims to protect wildlife and boost eco-tourism, a key foreign exchange earner. Park operators like Basecamp and Sarova are switching to bamboo and recycled materials. The ban complements the 2017 national plastic law and aligns with global sustainability trends. Over 2 million tourists visit parks annually.
