Siaya County took a major step toward enhancing public services on Monday as the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) commenced construction of Sh1.7 billion projects, including a modern referral hospital and the expansion of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya town. The groundbreaking ceremony was presided over by Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Soipan Tuya, who emphasized the government’s commitment to improving healthcare and promoting community development.

CS Tuya highlighted that the new hospital will be equipped with advanced medical technology to offer specialized healthcare services, boosting the county’s health sector. The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium will be upgraded from a 5,000-seater to a 20,000-capacity venue, with new terraces, roof canopy, and improved surrounding infrastructure. Tuya noted that the stadium upgrade will promote talent development, attract regional and international sporting events, and create opportunities for youth empowerment and economic growth.

Governor James Orengo welcomed the initiatives, describing them as timely interventions that will transform healthcare delivery and elevate the county’s sporting profile. He emphasized that the upgraded hospital will serve not only Siaya residents but also patients from across the region, becoming a key healthcare hub. Orengo also reiterated the importance of partnerships between the county and national government to ensure that these projects are completed on time, sustainably managed, and bring long-term benefits to the community. The event was attended by senior county officials, including Deputy County Commissioner Robert Ng’etich, County Secretary Joseph Ogutu, and members of the county assembly.
