by KenyaPolls

The Kakamega School for the Deaf made history at the 2025 National Chess Olympiad in Nakuru on May 11, 2025—winning the mixed team title using sign-language strategy boards and vibration timers. Captain David Omondi (16) went undefeated in 9 rounds. Chess speaks in silence—and we listen deeply, he signed. The win sparked a national push for inclusive tournaments: KCF now mandates sign interpreters and tactile boards at all events. Safaricom donated 500 Braille chess sets to special schools. FIDE awarded Kenya a grant to host the 2026 Africa Deaf Chess Champs.
