IPOA Launches Investigation After Deadly Clash in Narok
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened a formal investigation into a violent confrontation in Narok County that left two police officers dead and several others injured. The clash occurred along the Narok–Mai Mahiu highway on January 17, when local residents blocked the road over a speeding vehicle that allegedly killed dozens of their livestock.
According to IPOA, the demonstration began as a protest by herders demanding compensation for more than 20 sheep that were reportedly struck and killed by a car.
As police moved in to clear the blockade, the situation escalated into a full-blown confrontation. Residents reportedly fought back fiercely, leading to injuries on both sides.
A post‑mortem report later revealed that the two people killed suffered severe head and abdominal injuries; ballistic experts are analyzing metallic fragments recovered from the bodies to determine whether gunshots were involved.
IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan strongly condemned the violence, calling for accountability and urging local leaders and national institutions to work toward lasting solutions.
The authority has deployed a rapid response team to Narok to collect statements from injured officers, victims’ families and witnesses, and is seeking more public information through its toll-free line (1559).
In the coming days, forensic and ballistic experts from IPOA will continue their on-site investigation. The findings could lead to recommendations for disciplinary action or criminal prosecutions if any wrongdoing is uncovered. The case has also ignited debate on broader issues: many are now calling for stricter oversight of crowd-control operations, better community‑police engagement, and compensation mechanisms for victims of such protests.
